A member of the Pacific Whale Watch Association managed to spot Orca J35, a 22-year-old old member of JPod, who is also known as Talequah, on Saturday.

Sarah McCullagh, a naturalist and captain with San Juan Safaris, said:

We first saw J35 and her son J47 off by themselves away from the main group, then as we watched we quickly realized that there was a very small fin tucked in next to them. I was obviously elated, so excited for J35 after the incredible loss she suffered a couple of years ago, but also for the Southern Resident community as a whole. I definitely cried.

The Centre for Whale Research, a non-profit group, confirmed the birth of the calf.

J57, the newborn calf, is happy and precocious.

They were spotted swimming together, said officials.

On their official website, they said:

We hope this calf is a success story. Regrettably, with the whales having so much nutritional distress in recent years, a large percentage of pregnancies fail and there is about 40 per cent mortality for calves.

Even with the birth of J57, there are only 73 orcas in their group.

Southern Resident Killer Whales are critically endangered.

Experts and researchers all over the world believe that the fact with pollution, lack of Chinook salmon, and habitat loss are just some of the many factors that are killing the animals.

In 2018, J35, the mother of the J57 calf, made headlines in 2018 when she was seen carrying her calf for 17 days despite it being dead.

She was seen swimming with the calf for 1,500 kilometers in over 2 weeks.

Some are destined to be great mothers, and J35 is one of them.
