A pet owner from South Africa was baffled when he saw a giant spider hauling his pet goldfish out of his pond.

Jérémy Schalkwijk, the pet owner, was trying to show off his pet goldfish to his new date when he discovered the spider.

Pictures show the huge spider nursery web spider carrying Cleo, the goldfish, dangling in its jaws as it was being carried out of the pond.

The incident happened in the personal pond of Jérémy Schalkwijk when he took Athina Yalias, his new date to show off his pet.

The 33-year-old was blown away by the moment as he believes the fish was double the weight of the predator.

Talking about the incident, Jérémy said, “It was a crazy, crazy sight. You don’t see that every day.”

Jérémy says it is still hard to believe that something that small can carry twice its weight in that manner.

In his own words, Jérémy said, “I’ve never seen something like that before. I knew [the spiders] could fish, but never such a large size. You see it sometimes with small fish like fingerlings, but never with a goldfish. This was twice the weight of the spider.”

Jérémy rushed to Athina to show the unusual incident.

The pair went back to the scene to watch what the spider would do next, but when they returned, the spider and his pet fish were nowhere to be found near the pond.

He said, “When we came back [out] both animals were nowhere to be found.”

Jérémy and Athina were on a second date when the spider decided to take the fish out of the pond.

Talking about Athina, Jérémy said, “She is not a real bush woman so she doesn’t have much experience with animals, but she was so impressed.”
