Chennai, India: There is no official or recommended dress code for driving license applicants, but women are being denied from taking driving tests if they wear jeans.

According to an official of the Regional Transport Office, men or women are requested to wear proper clothes when they come to a public building.

The official said, “Whether it is men or women, the general advice is to come in a proper dress. It is not moral policing.”

The official added, “Different kinds of people will come to RTO daily. In order to avoid any untoward incident the applicants are advised to come in proper dress. Men who are in lungi, shorts are asked to come in proper attire.”

But according to reports, women are being refused to take driving tests if they wear jeans.

A woman who works as a software engineer was asked to go back home and come back wearing proper Indian attire by an official in K.K. Nagar, Chennai.

The woman was reportedly wearing jeans and a sleeveless top.

In a similar event, a woman was asked to go back home and come back after she wears proper attire. The woman was wearing a Capri.

This is not the first time that incidents like these have happened in India.

Last year, men who wore shorts, Bermudas, and boxers were being asked to go back home and change their attires.

In defense of their acts, the RTO said their offices are public government-run offices, and people who come there should know how to respect others.

In addition, authorities said people should wear clothes like they are going to their own office.
