2 Thai Restaurant Owners Get 723 Years In Prison For Seafood Voucher Scam
2 restaurant owners in Thailand get 723 years in prison for defrauding the public with a seafood promotion.
Authorities said that Apichart Bowornbancharak and Prapassorn Bawornban sold vouchers to customers that allowed them to use their seafood buffet at a very low price.
But the 2 owners reneged on the promotions, which led hundreds of people complaining about the scam.
Prosecutors said that they were aware that the offer could not be fulfilled.
The prosecutors said in court:
It was impossible to sell such high-quality food as advertised. They didn’t have (the) intention to fulfill the conditions as advertised to the public.
The pair, whose restaurant was named as Laemgate Infinite, was arrested in September last year.
Thailand often issues lengthy prison sentenced owing to multiple counts, however, Thailand Law means that they will not serve more than 20 years in jail.
Prosecutors said that 347 customers had purchased promotion after it was advertised on Facebook and other social media accounts.
The restaurant reportedly offered vouchers as low as 88 Thai baht, which is around $3 USD.
A prosecutor said that Apichart Bowornbancharak and Prapassorn Bawornban pleaded guilty from the beginning of their court proceedings.
The sentences of Apichart Bowornbancharak and Prapassorn Bawornban were reduced from 1,446 years after they confessed.
They were also fined 1,807,500 baht, which is around $58,500 USD.
