[WATCH] Hardik Pandya Was Run-Out But Still Umpire Declared Him Not-Out! Check Out Why
After losing the first ODI against the hosts by D/L method as rain interrupted the play at Chennai, Aussies were all set to fight back strongly in the 2nd ODI at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. It was the most exciting match in the 5-match ODI series.
There were a lot of goose-bump moments and also few weird moments in the match. The final stage of Indian innings was set, they had a decent total on the board with the big hitter at the crease. He had the license to smash and kill the bowlers in the death overs.
Team India had 233 runs on the board and had a great chance of getting somewhere close to 265 runs in the last 3 overs with Hardik Pandya in the middle. If you have watched the match closely, in the 48th over, Hardik was caught and even run-out, but still he wasn’t given out.
On the 4th ball of the 48th over, Hardik went for the big shot but didn’t quite connect and Steve Smith at covers pocketed it. But the Australian skipper doubted that the Kane Richardson delivery might be above waist height and thus he shouted to get the attention of his bowler and got him to take off the bails for a run-out.
It is technically right to give a run-out on a no-ball. But still, umpire declared that Pandya is not-out. Wondering why? This was the question raised in everyone’s mind during the match. Even the law went in favor of Hardik and was given not-out.
According to the law 27.7, the batsman leaving his wicket under a misapprehension.
As it seemed like Smith would comfortably take the catch, Pandya didn’t even attempt to take a run and was walking off amidst it started to rain and the play was halted. Upon keen observation into the replays, it suggested that the ball was above the waist of the batsman and thus it was declared a no-ball.
However, not ending up with the catch, Smith went to claim it as run-out thinking that it was a no-ball. But the umpire Anil Choudhary rather ruled it not out. During the interruption, the Aussies were clearing it out with the umpires what was the basis for their decision.
Law-27.7: “An umpire shall intervene if satisfied that a batsman, not having been given out, has left his wicket under a misapprehension that he is out. The umpire intervening shall call and signal Dead ball to prevent any further action by the fielding side and shall recall the batsman.”
So, as per the law, Pandya was not given out because he left the crease under the misapprehension that he was out. The Indians were given a free hit when play resumed and it was Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the non-striker on the previous delivery who played it.
