India Vs West Indies T20 One-Off: India Remains Favorite Despite Chris Gayle’s Comeback
Post the Champions Trophy, India has been playing well against Indies in the recently completed India vs West Indies series. With an interesting 3-1, India bagged the series gracefully. Following the ODI series, a T20 one-off is yet to be played with the same team.
With the change in format, certain modifications in the upcoming T20 are carried out, which includes Skipper Virat Kohli opening the innings.
However, with the fair victory in the five-match ODI series, India will undoubtedly dominate the match despite the comeback of Chris Gayle, who can single-handedly swing the fortunes of the team. Now that Gayle is returning to the Caribbean Maroons after 15 months post his battles with injuries, a fine result is barely expected from him. His poor performance is already noticed in the recent IPL.
Maybe, there are still plenty of chances for Indies to grab the one-off, as the team reigns few of the world’s most admired players like Marlon Samuels, Sunil Narine, Samuel Badree and Evin Lewis, who had scored a 49-ball-100 in West Indies’ one-run win over India in a T20 game in Florida, last year, which was led by skipper Carlos Brathwaite.
Coming to the contexts of India, it is well known that Kohli has already opened a lot for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL and also occasionally for India when Rohit Sharma has not been around. While Ajinkya Rahane has had a fantastic ODI series with close to 350 runs including a century and three half-tons, Kohli opening the innings with Shikhar Dhawan looks more imminent considering the change in the format respectively.
Meanwhile, the young Rishabh Pant could finally get his chance on the tour as the Indian team management is aiming to groom Pant as the future limited-overs gloves man.
On the other hand, there are chances that Kuldeep Yadav, who has been a successful T20 bowler for Kolkata Knight Riders, may also make his T20 International debut after an impressive series in which he picked up eight wickets. Since there has been a pattern in the first XI selection of the Indian team, the last T20 International saw leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal pick up six England wickets.
As Chahal is not part of this squad, the management may go for a wrist spinner in Kuldeep, who has the ability trouble the batsmen with his wrong ‘uns. And, IPL’s highest wicket-taker, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, after some well-earned rest, will be leading the pace attack alongside Umesh Yadav exclusively.
On the rival side, Narine and Badree will lead the bowling phenomenon as they can trouble the Indian batsmen with their variations. Narine may also open the innings, something which he successfully did during the IPL.
