Rohit came from a middle-class family that was never well off in the first place. And things even went from bad to worse. His father Gurunath Sharma had a job at a transport company. He lost his job after the transport company went bankrupt and had to shot it.

The family had difficulty putting together a meal on the table. And the dreams of cricket and stardom were too far away to think about. Rohit’s uncle was the only one who saw identified his interest in cricket and encouraged it.

One day while walking on the streets, they spotted a luxury sedan in his locality. And Rohit told his mentor that he would one day buy the same car. Today he owns that very car.

Pitching at Rs 50 each, his uncles and their friends got Rohit to join a small cricket academy in 1999. This was where he met the coach, Dinesh Lad. He started off as an off-spinner but his coach converted him into a batsman.

Rohit hesitated to join SVIS since it was an expensive affair. However, Dinesh got him a scholarship at Swami Vivekananda International School, keeping the better training facilities in mind. Dinesh was just one of the many people who believed in Rohit’s potential.

With time, Rohit excelled at it and started to put in exceptional performances with the bat at the school-level tournaments. It was his impressive performance at the Giles and Harris Shield school cricket tournaments that paved the way for his selection into the Mumbai Under-17 team. Before long, Rohit Sharma was included in the Indian Under-17 and Under-19 Indian teams.

Finishing off as the leading run-scorer in the Under-19 tournament with some mighty knocks, there was no looking back for Rohit. In 2006, he made his domestic debut for India-A, which he followed up with an international debut in 2007, against New Zealand. He was only 20 years old at the time. From starting as a steady middle-order batsman for India, Rohit is unarguably one of the most reliable match-winners for the national team right now.
