Hubble Space Telescope: Scientists Find Super Earth With Water 110 Light-Years Away

For the first time in forever, Scientists have found a planet outside our solar system that has water. The planet could possibly host life.

The K2-18b has an atmosphere and the correct temperature to host life. Water vapor was discovered on the planet, which is 2 times bigger than earth and is 8 times heavier.

The K2-18b planet is closer to its Sun, this means shorter years and days. The K2-18b only takes 33 days to complete its orbit.

The K2-18b is too far away for astronomers to see, so the things we can observe about the planet are limited.

Dr. Angelos Tsiaras, the author of the research, said, “It’s the only planet outside our solar system that we know has the correct temperature, an atmosphere, and water.”

The planet has liquid water and water vapor, which means there could be a lot of rocks and ice on the planet.

Dr. Angelos added, “Of course, K2-18b is not a second Earth because it is a planet that is much bigger and has a different atmospheric composition.”

Dr. Angelos added, “It’s orbiting a completely different star, so it doesn’t look like Earth. The search for habitable planets, it’s very exciting, but it’s here to always remind us that this (Earth) is our only home and it’s probably out of the question if we will be able to travel to other planets.”

Researchers say there is no way we can determine if there is life on the planet.

Researchers will continue to look at the planet to confirm their theory that it is capable of sustaining life.

Researchers said the water content at the earth-like planet could be as low as 0.01 percent or as high as 50 percent.

Dr. Ingo Waldmann, the co-author of the study, said, “We don’t know how much water there is; however, what these models clearly say is that there is an atmosphere and that there is water there. “

Researchers are also looking to use the James Webb Space Telescope, which is going to launch on March 2021.

The JWST (James Webb Space Telescope) will unlock more secrets beyond our solar system.

Dr. Tsiaras said, “We are looking forward to the next generation of telescopes and go even further.”
