A 77-year-old man successfully fought off a masked attacker that tried to rob him at a cash machine outside a supermarket in Cardiff.

Footage of the incident showed the would-be robber suddenly grabbing the 77-year-old as he was withdrawing cash outside a Sainsbury supermarket in Cardiff.

The incident happened on February 5, 2020.

After a brief fight, the 77-year-old squared up with his attacker, who was demanding cash and his bank card.

In the video, several punches can be seen being thrown off before the suspect made off empty-handed.

Detective Constable Stephen Mayne of the South Wales Police, said, “The victim in this case showed great bravery, however he has been left shaken.”

He added, “We would encourage anyone who knows him to please come forward.”

The suspect was a white man that was carrying a black rucksack and was wearing a high-vis vest and black hat with a white motif on the front when he carried out the attack.

The South Wales Police spokesperson released a statement about the incident.

The statement said, “Detectives have been checking in on him and he’s doing okay. He was shocked and very shaky after the incident, but thankful nothing worse had happened.”
