Alabama Pregnant Woman Shot In Stomach Charged With Manslaughter For Fetus’s Death – Charges Dropped
Earlier this year, Marshae Jones, a pregnant woman from Alabama, was charged with manslaughter after she lost her fetus when she was shot in her stomach during a fight.
An Alabama district attorney said that she is dropping the charges against Marshae Jones, who was indicted for manslaughter after she lost her fetus when she got shot during a fight.
Jones was arrested by the authorities after a grand jury concluded that she initiated the fight knowing that she was pregnant, which caused the death of her fetus.
Marshae was 5 months into the pregnancy when Ebony Jemison shot her in the stomach during an argument of the father of the baby that she was carrying.
Ebony was first charged with manslaughter, but a grand jury at Jefferson County decline to indict her after the police determined that Jones initiated the fight and Jemison fired as an act of self-defense.
Jones was then arrested by the police.
Lynneice Washington, a local district attorney, said that she won’t be pursuing the case.
Lawyers that were defending Ebony Jones in the case filed a motion after the news broke out.
The lawyers said that the state used a flawed and twisted rationale that ignored the law and the reason. They also mentioned that Marshae caused the death of her own fetus after she initiated the fight.
The state of Alabama is one of the states in the United States that has homicide laws that allow criminal charges when fetuses are killed.
The arrest of Marshae Jones sparked outrage in the country with many women rights campaigners calling it an attempt to charge women for crimes that are related to their pregnancies.
Yellowhammer Fund, an abortion group based in Alabama, said, “Marshae Jones was indicted for manslaughter for losing a pregnancy after being shot in the abdomen FIVE times. Her shooter remains free.”
“We’re going to get Marshae out of jail and assist with her legal representation.”
