Caught On Cam: High-School Football Coach Stops Potential Shooting By Disarming Student With Shotgun By Hugging Him

An amazing, yet scaring video has gone viral on social media and it shows a high school coach stopping a school shooting by disarming the gunman, who brought a shotgun with him, by hugging him and consulting him.

The incident happened on 17 May 2019, at the Parkrose High-School in Portland, Oregon.

The video shows Keanon Lowe, a former college footballer and is now a high-school football coach, find a shooter wandering around the school with a shotgun.

Keanon found himself face to face with a student of the school that was armed with a shotgun.

Instead of running away, Keanon faced the shooter and decided to confront him by hugging him.

Talking about the incident, Keanon said, “In a fraction of a second, I analyzed everything really fast, saw the look on his face, looked at his eyes, looked at the gun, I realized it was a real gun and then my instincts just took over.”

He added, “I lunged for the gun, put two hands on the gun, and he had his two hands on the gun…I was just making sure the barrel of the gun isn’t pointed towards them or towards me. I was able to wrestle it away.”

Keanon said the student broke down when he hugged him.

Keanon continued, “He broke down and I just wanted to let him know that I was there for him. I told him I was there to save him. I was there for a reason and that this is a life worth living.”

Authorities arrested Angel Granados-Diaz, a 19-year-old student.

Diaz was arrested and charged with 2 counts of having a firearm in a public place.

Further investigation found out that Diaz was on a suicide mission.

Adam Thayne, the attorney of Diaz, said, “The evidence he was at Parkrose High School to commit suicide is overwhelming. It is also overwhelming that he was there to hurt himself and nobody else.”

Diaz pleaded guilty to both charges that were placed against him.

He agreed on a deal that sentenced him to serve 36 months of probation, 64 hours of community services, and mental health and substance misuse treatment.

Kathleen Dailey, the Circuit Judge of the Multnomah County, said, “Because of what’s going on in our state and nationally it only made sense that they interpreted the situation to be yet another horrendous, horrific event that was taking place before their very eyes.”

Kathleen added, “So my empathy goes out to those people as well. The situation shows you’re in high need of support and intervention.”

A life was saved that day thanks to the selfless and heroic act of the football coach. Thank you, sir, you helped a young kid get a new perspective on life.
