Doctors Remove 14 CM Long Toothbrush From Chinese Man’s Abdomen
Guangdong, China: Chinese doctors removed a 14-centimeter long toothbrush from a 51-year-old man’s abdomen that swallowed it 20 years ago.
Li, the 51-year-old man, was rushed to the Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital in Guangdong province after he said he had pain in his stomach.
A CT scan was then performed on Li and it revealed that he had a mysterious item in his duodenum.
When the doctors asked Li if he ingested anything, he said that he swallowed a toothbrush 20-years-ago when he tried to commit suicide after he contracted HIV from taking drugs.
The doctors said that the toothbrush stayed in his belly without causing any discomfort until 2014.
Liu Jialin, a surgeon at the Shenzhen Third People’s Hospital, said “The toothbrush might have stayed in the stomach and duodenum for many years before sticking into the bile duct, causing the inflammation and pain. If left untreated, it could touch the liver and result in a fatal infection.”
Surgeons asked Li to undergo through an endoscope so they could take a better look at the toothbrush and try to retrieve it.
The toothbrush’s bristles were dissolved and it was in really bad shape.
After the suicide attempt of Li failed, he renounced the drugs and started his HIV Treatment.
He is now married and is the father of 2 healthy children.
During an interview, Li said, “I have long forgotten the toothbrush, assuming that it had expelled on its own.”
