Florida Man With Mental Illness Has Eight-Inch Screwdriver Removed From Rectum

A 46-year-old man from Florida had mysterious abdominal pain, but when the test results came, the doctors discovered an 8-inch screwdriver shoved in his rectum.

The man, whose identity was not shared with the public, nearly suffered a life-threatening punctured bowel, which resulted in a septic shock that sent him to the Emergency Room.

The rare case was published in the Annals of Medicine and Surgery.

A CT scan was done to find out what was causing the mysterious abdominal pain.

The man was having severe pain in his abdomen and pelvis.

Doctors from the Kendall Regional Medical Center in Miami said that sepsis decayed a part of the man’s buttocks, which was removed so they could eliminate the source of the infection.

The 46-year-old man has a history of mental illness, which includes schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Several X-rays were done, and they showed an object inside his rectum.

The man was rushed to the operating room, where doctors removed the screwdriver.

Initially, the doctors tried to remove the screwdriver without surgery, but the screwdriver was hardened along with the human waste.

The doctors were forced to cut into the man’s abdominal cavity, where they discovered that the metal tip had perforated his large intestine and dug itself into the buttock muscle.

The rectum of the man was disabled and a surgery was done to direct waste into a bag outside his bag.

An ostomy reversal will be done in the future.

Dr. Youssef Shaban, the leader of the team, said, “At two weeks follow up the patient was doing well.”

Dr. Shaban added, “The patient recovered and was discharged to Behavioral Health for inpatient treatment of his psychiatric disorders.”

The doctors at the Kendall Regional did not report the reason why the man inserted a screwdriver into his rectum. But, Dr. Shaban said, “The most common reason, by far, for anal foreign body insertion is sexual pleasure.”

A similar accident happened earlier this year with a Chinese man.

A 60-year-old unnamed man from China used a glass bottle, a 7-inch bottle to be exact, to scratch his bum, but it ended up going inside his rectum.

After the bottle ended up in the wrong place, the man went to the Dongguan Hospital of Traditional Chinese and Western, which is located in the Guangdong Province of South China.

The bottle was removed through surgery.
