Greater Vancouver Zoo: Young Girl Bitten By A Black Bear

Greater Vancouver Zoo: Authorities are currently investigating an incident, in which a young girl was bitten by a black bear on August 5, 2019.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the young girl crossed the safety barrier that surrounds the enclosure of the black bear.

Reports suggest that the incident happened on Monday evening by 7 pm.

The RCMP said that the young girl managed to stuck her arm through a chain fence at the zoo and was bitten by the black bear.

The paramedics were called in at the zoo after the incident came to light.

According to the BC Emergency Health Services, 2 critical care teams and an air ambulance were brought in.

The young girl was brought to a hospital through an air ambulance and was in a serious condition.

Authorities did not release any more details about the girl and about her health condition.

Menita Prasad, the animal care manager of the Greater Vancouver Zoo, said, “The zoo team is deeply saddened and shocked by the incident that occurred yesterday”

Menita added, “I’ve been with the facility for 15 years,” she added, “and I’ve never experienced something like this.”

The bear enclosure remained a day after the incident so the police and conservation officers could investigate the incident.

Murray Smith of the B.C. Conservation Officer Service said that the black bear will not be euthanized.

Menita said it is still not clear how the girl managed to reach the second fence of the enclosure.

The zoo is also investigating the incident, Menita added that the zoo will make necessary changes if there are areas for improvement.
