The United States Air Force allowed Harpreetinder Singh Bajwa to follow his Sikh traditions, the airman is allowed to wear his turban while on-duty and keep his bear during the span of his service. Harpreetinder is the first active-duty airman that has been allowed to serve the US Air Force with a beard and Turban.

During a press release by the Sikh American Legal Defense and Education Fund on Thursday, the SALDEF said that Airman Harpreentinder Singh Bajwa was allowed to wear his turban, keep his beard, and unshorn hair while serving the country.

During the release, Harpreetinder Singh Bajwa said, “Today, I feel that my country has embraced my Sikh heritage, and I will be forever grateful for this opportunity.”

Harpreetinder Singh Bajwa decided to join the Air Force in 2017, but he was unable to follow the practice due to the groom and dress codes of the Air Force.

The Air Force allowed him an accommodation after Harpreetinder Singh Bajwa gained representation from the Sikh American Veterans Alliance and the American Civil Liberties Union.

Heather L. Weaver, senior staff attorney for the ACLU, was happy with the decision of the Air Force.

During a news release, she said, “No one should have to choose between following their faith or serving their country.”

She added, “We’re pleased that the Air Force granted our client’s request, and we hope that all branches of the military come to recognize the importance of religious inclusion and diversity.”
