Estaban Ruiz, the father of Sarai, was deported from the country when she was 4-years-old.  Even though she lives with her parents in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, Sarai attended school in the US, which means, she had to cross the border every day to attend her classes.

During her graduation day, Estaban Ruiz was not able to attend her graduation since he could not re-enter the country.

During an interview with the NBC News, Ruiz said, “As I looked over at my mom that day as my principal was speaking, I couldn’t help but to see other parents there for their kids, and it wasn’t just a mom.”

She added, “It was mom and dad, or mom and dad and grandma and grandpa. And it really did hit home for me. I knew that my dad couldn’t be there.”

But this did not stop Sarai from celebrating her graduation.

In the video that was shared on Facebook, it showed Ruiz meeting up with her father on the Puente de las Americas, which is also known as the Gateway to the Americas Bridge, it is a border bridge between the United States of America and Mexico.

The video showed Ruiz and her father embracing each other while emotions poured from their eyes.

Ruiz said, “I gave him a hug and I just started to cry a lot.”

She added, “It’s like I fulfilled the dreams of both my mom and dad to find better opportunities that they didn’t have.”

The video now has 91 thousand likes, 240 comments, 34 thousand shares, and over 3.5 million views.

In the post, Ruiz said, “I graduated today. I tried so hard not to cry when we saluted our parents knowing that only my mom was there. I knew my father would never see me walk to get my diploma but today I’d thought I’d surprise him by crossing the bridge so he could see me with my cap and gown.”

Ruiz also talked about her knowing her father would never see her walk on the graduation stage.

She said, “I knew my father would never see me walk to get my diploma but today I’d thought I’d surprise him by crossing the bridge so he could see me with my cap and gown.”

Sarai Ruiz plans to continue her studies in the US at the University of Texas at Austin.
