Just For Fun: Man Jailed For Stealing Blue Light From Top Of Police Vehicle

A man from was arrested by the police and was jailed for stealing an emergency blue light from the top of a police vehicle.

David Ryan Mcbeth was caught on camera jumping on the bonnet while trying to rip the bar from its roof.

Ryan then walked away from the vehicle with the blue light on his shoulder.

The man reportedly did it for some bragging rights.

The case made national headlines when British Transport Police released images of the man with hopes of identifying him.

Ryan, who is from Bevan Avenue, Ryhope, was arrested 1 month after the incident.

He was sentenced to spend 11 weeks in jail for stealing the light, which by the way has not been recovered by the police.

Nicki Forster, prosecuting, said that the police officers realized that the light was missing when they were about to use the vehicle.

The incident happened on December 27, 2018, when the car was parked in Station Street, which is located in Sunderland Railway Station.

In the video, 2 males were spotted in the footage approaching the car from Waterloo Street at around 4:31 am on Boxing day.

Talking about the incident, Forster said, “One of the males is seen to jump several times on the police car bonnet and to try to remove the blue bar from the vehicle while the other male looked on.”

She added, “He puts it on his shoulder and off towards Athenaeum Street with other male.”

Charlie Carr, mitigating, released a statement about the incident.

Carr said, “There was no rhyme or reason why he has done what he has done. It was a moment of madness after Christmas Day.”

Initially, Ryan denied committing offense before changing his plea on the morning of his trial.

While sentencing him, Judge Kate Meek said: “It is also in anyone’s definition anti-social behavior which you have numerous previous offenses for.”

She added, “It has caused significant inconvenience to the police and significant inconvenience to various members of the public because the police car was out of action.”

Constable Michael Proudfoot, a police officer with the British Transport Police, released a statement about the incident.

Constable Proudfoot said, “This was an act of sheer stupidity, he targeted a squad car in clear view of cameras and would not stop until he got hold of the emergency lights. You can only imagine he did this for some nonsense bragging rights.”

He added, “What he clearly didn’t consider is that it would force us to take a car out of action and cost the police time and money to get it replaced. Such selfishness isn’t something we or the courts take lightly and that’s why he’s been jailed.”
