Washington Man Arrested For Teaching His Dog To Drive And Causing High-Speed Chase

Authorities arrested a man on Sunday for leading troopers on a high-speed chase with his dog, who was sitting in the driver’s seat.

A spokeswoman for the Washington State Patrol said that the man, who is from Lakewood, Washington, hit 2 cars on a separate occasion and failed to stop both times.

This led the police to a high-speed chase up the Interstate 5.

No injuries were reported in either crash.

Heather Axtman, a trooper, said, “He was driving very erratically. So erratically that multiple people called 911.”

The suspect was driving recklessly and went on a pursuit at 109 miles an hour.

One of the troopers attempted to corner the suspect’s car, looked inside just to realize that there was a pitbull sitting in the driver’s seat while the suspected steered.

Axtman said that the suspect was trying to evade the troopers.

The suspect drove onto Centennial Trail, a trail which is used for bicyclists and pedestrians.

The incident happened in Snohomish County.

Axtman said, “The fact that there wasn’t anybody on the trail is nothing shy of miraculous. We are very thankful.”

Eventually, troopers were able to use spike strips to end the pursuit.

During the arrest, Axtman said the suspect gave them only one explanation, which was “I was trying to teach his dog how to drive.”

Axtman, who is also a public information officer, said, “I wish I could make this up. I’ve been a trooper for almost 12 years and wow, I’ve never heard this excuse. I’ve been in a lot of high speed chases, I’ve stopped a lot of cars, and never have I gotten an excuse that they were teaching their dog how to drive.”

Authorities with the Washington State Patrol charged the man, whose identity was not shared with the public, with reckless endangerment, hit and run, driving under the influence, and felony eluding.

His bond was set at $8500.

As for the pet dog, Axtman said that she is very sweet girl.

The dog was taken to the animal shelter after her owner was arrested.
