Marissa Davidson, who is from New South Wales, purchased the 4-kilogram bag of potatoes last Friday from Woolworths.
Davidson said that she discovered the snake inside the bag when she was trying to grab some potatoes out of it.
During an interview with 9News, Davidson said, “I opened it and I grabbed two potatoes out, and I was like, ‘Oh no, I’ll do three’ and turned around to get the other one and it jumped out.”
After the snake got out of the bag, it started to slither towards her 5-year-old son, Chase, who is diagnosed with a congenital heart defect.
Talking about the condition of his son, Davidson said, “He has got hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which is half a heart, and it could have made him very sick.”
The mother said she sprang into action and killed the reptile.
Recalling the incident, she said, “I grabbed my son then ran and got my vacuum pole and smashed its head off.”
She added, “It was terrifying, I still can’t sleep.”
Davidson also shared a picture of the snake and the bag of potatoes, where it was found on Woolworths’ Facebook page.
After the post went viral, the company released a statement where they apologized for the incident.
The company said, “We’re very concerned to see what you’ve found in your bag of potatoes. As you’re aware through your contact with our Advocacy team, this has been passed on to our quality team for their immediate attention.”
The statement by Woolworths added, “Thank you for taking the time to let us know about this and once again we apologize for your experience.”
Woolworths refused to give a refund to Davidson.
Stuart McKenzie, a member of the Sunshine Coast Snake Catchers 24/7, said the snake appeared to be a marsh snake, which are venomous.
