Uber Driver Who Raped 17-Year-Old In Bondi Girl Gets 6 Years Jail Time
An Uber driver from Bondi, Australia, who raped a 17-year-old girl has been sentenced to serve 6 years in prison.
Onur Dedeoglu was taking the then 17-year-old home after she had been celebrating finishing trial Year 12 exams in August 2018.
The Uber driver dropped 2 of her male friends off and then deactivated his Uber for a window of 18 minutes.
The woman reportedly woke up to find the man on top of her in the back seat.
A jury earlier this year accepted the evidence of the victim that 39-year-old Onur Dedeoglu said “it is OK” after she tried to push him off.
The 17-year-old said the driver was kissing her and digitally penetrating her.
The driver was found guilty of 2 counts of indecent assault and 1 sexual intercourse without consent.
Judge Nicole Normal called the incident “out of character and opportunistic.”
She told the Downing Center District Court, “Although approaching adulthood, the victim was still a child who was entitled to safety.”
She added, “The offender took advantage of vulnerability.”
Dedeoglu, the driver, said that the girl gave consent and said that she was in her 20s.
The judge sentenced the driver to 8 years and 6 months in jail with a minimum of 6 years.
The victim, whose identity was not shared with the public, said she was violated, confused, and distraught.
Recalling the incident, the victim said, “Finishing high school was meant to be one of the most enjoyable periods of my teenage years.”
She added, “I’ll have to live with the memory of that trauma for the rest of my life.”
The court heard that the wife of the Uber driver and his young son returned to Turkey after the incident.
He has no other family in Australia.
The driver will be eligible for parole in April 2025.
