The United Kingdom Is Set To Become The First Country To Ban Live Animal Exports
The United Kingdom is set to become the first country in the world to ban live animal exports.
The Environment Secretary of the United Kingdom made the plans public, where it was said that the country will be banning the export of live animals for slaughter and fattening.
The move comes as the government is trying to make the United Kingdom a strong world leader that also takes care of animals.
The plans include proposals of giving animals more space and headroom during transportation.
Live animals that are transported for slaughter and other purposes have to endure long journeys. Such journeys are known to cause distress and injury.
The United Kingdom can possibly become the first country in Europe to end this type of practice.
As of now, the government is consulting proposals to improve animal welfare in transport in general.
Here are some of the improvements that are being discussed:
- Fewer journey times
- More space during transport
- More headroom during transport
- Bette rules when it comes to transporting animals during hot and cold temperatures
- Better rules for transporting live animals by the sea
George Eustice, the Environment Secretary of England, released a statement about the new plans of the country.
The statement reads:
We are committed to improving the welfare of animals at all stages of life. Today marks a major step forward in delivering on our manifesto commitment to end live exports for slaughter. Now that we have left the EU, we have an opportunity to end this unnecessary practice. We want to ensure that animals are spared stress prior to slaughter.
This is such a huge thing for animals and their safety.
