PepsiCo Seeking To Withdraw As IPL Title Sponsors After IPL Spot Fixing Scandal
Shashank Manohar, the new BCCI President elected after Jagmohan Dalmiya’s death has been busy in taking responsibilities and implementing some new opportunities and availing benefits to the players, etc. Now, Shashank Manohar has been facing another headache as he is forced to sort out the sponsorship issue with a disgruntled PepsiCo.
Rajiv Shukla Remains Hopeful:
PepsiCo had decided to pull out as the title sponsorship of Indian Premier League (IPL). According to the reports, Pepsi has signed a five-year agreement with the IPL in 2013 as the title sponsorship for the tournament and it decided to cut their deal with the league. This decision was taken after the IPL spot-fixing scandal took place.
This issue had to be discussed in the working committee meeting on October 18th, 2015 in Mumbai. “Last season, Pepsi wanted to withdraw, especially in the aftermath of the spot-fixing case, but the BCCI managed to convince it to stick on for another year.” This time, Pepsi was firm that it will not continue its association with IPL. “The conflict of interest issues also had an impact.”
IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla has however not termed the development as a major issue, and he hopes that the matter will get settled “amicably” in the working committee meeting. Meanwhile, no official statement has come yet from PepsiCo. “We are in talks with other sponsors as well, so the title deal with Pepsi is not that big an issue. They have certain points and we are going to settle them amicably in the next meeting,” Rajiv Shukla said.
