South African ODI captain AB de Villiers and his South African side have been fined for slow over-rate in the first ODI against India at the Green Park stadium in Kanpur on Sunday. De Villiers was fined 40 percent of his fee while the rest of the team had to part ways with 20 percent.

According to match referee Chris Broad, South Africa fell 2 overs short in the allotted time as they held their nerve in a close finish to emerge victorious by five runs to take a 1-0 lead in the 5-match series.

South Africa fined for slow over rate during 1st ODI:

“In accordance with Article 2.5.1 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Players Support Personnel, which relates to minor over-rate offences, players are fined 10 per cent of their match fees for every over their side fails to bowl in the allotted time, with the captain fined double that amount,” the media release stated.

If South Africa commits another minor over-rate breach in ODIs within 12 months of this offence with de Villiers as captain, it will be deemed a second offence by de Villiers and he will again face a suspension.

De Villiers’ 73-ball 104 proved to be decisive for the visitors who sealed the first ODI by 5 runs. The South African team will play their next match on October 14 in Indore city. They are leading the ODI series by 1-0 with four more matches to go.
