“Kayal” tells the love story of free-spirited hero Aaron (Chandran) and innocent Kayal (Anandhi). The hero and his friend Socrates work for six month in a year and travel the country for the next six months. On their trip to Kanyakumari, they help a couple to elope and this incident brings the hero and heroine together. What happens next is predictable. But the story keeps the audience guessing throughout the movie.

When Aaron, the hero of Kayal is introduced, we hear in the background the song Enge En Jeevane from Uyarndha Ullam. The song is playing on the radio, which Socrates, Aaron’s friend is listening to. This song not only gives Prabu Solomon an opportunity to include the mandatory Ilaiyaraaja song, but also serves to tells us what the film is going to be about — two madly-in-love characters searching for each other. Later, when Aaron enters the palatial mansion where Kayal works, what do we hear? The very same song!

Kayal story is an inspired story from the real disaster of Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami. the movie is all about the survivor of the disaster and so many twists and turns in the script. Purely the movie is based on the real situation, which happened 10 yrs ago. What happened then, will make you feel pain in your heart. Hero Chandran, the way he emotes in each scenes all make you fell that he is more experienced actor.
Undoubtedly Chandra is the best debut of this year. Superb expressions and brilliant acting. Ananthi as Kayal, she justifies the title role, her face expression are major plus, Ananthi’s eyes speaks. More weightage could have given to her role. Another character who travels along with the hero is his friend Socrates. He delivers a neat performance. Long way to go. You can see him in more films in near future. Among many small characters the one who stays in mind is the lorry driver, a contrast behaviour from the face.

Technical Aspects Added to the Film :

Music – Imman has given his best for Prabhu Solomon. The songs were just ear friendly before the movie’s release, but when it couples with visuals, the magnitude of the tracks gets multiplied to another level. Imman makes use of Violins to fill the BGM and it sounds so soothing in the first half and evokes grief in the second half.

Cinematographer Mahenderan takes us on a breathtaking journey with his stunning camera skills. His camera captures the enchanting journey of the vagabond hero, whose quest in life is to travel. The CG work of the Tsunami is definitely a big highlight. As the big wave gushes forth, you feel the intensity of the calamity, and that’s perfectly done by the filmmaker. Several characters add soul to the film, be it the bus driver or the police officer. The scenes in which they appear seem enjoyable.

The script and dialogues of the movie are one of the major highlights of the movie. The first half is a complete entertainer with some great comedy, one-liners and funny instances. The dialogues and narration absorb you into the storyline. The narration of the movie is as smooth as a poem which leaves you with some memorable thoughts on life.
