Japanese Mayor Says Men Should Do Grocery Shopping During Pandemic Because Women Take Too Long To Shop
The Mayor of Osaka, Japan, which is the third-largest city of the country, is facing a public backlash after he said that men should be the ones to make grocery shopping during the coronavirus pandemic because women take too long to shop.
On April 23, 2020, Ichiro Matsui, the Mayor of Osaka, was speaking at a coronavirus press conference in Osaka when a male reporter asked about the possibility of reducing shoppers’ entry to supermarkets as a measure to lower the risk of increasing the infections in the city.
As a response, Matsui said:
Women take a longer time grocery shopping because they browse through different products and weigh out which option is best, but men quickly grab what they’re told to buy so they won’t linger at the supermarket — that avoids close contact with others.
After making the statement, a reporter and many social media users pointed out that his remarks were sexist.
