‘Facebook Thinks I’m a Terrorist’ – Woman Named ‘Isis’ has Facebook Account Suspended

A software engineer from San Fransisco tried to login into her Facebook account. But, the account has been disabled because, Facebook has suspended her account. Is there any reason? Yes, the reason behind the suspension of account is her name which makes people uncomfortable. Facebook Inc has said it fallaciously disabled the personal account of a user named Isis Anchalee for about a day. The user claims that Facebook thinks her as a terrorist because of the unfortunate similarity between her first name which is used as an acronym used for the Islamic State extremist group.

Facebook Suspended Account of Software Engineer

Isis Anchalee is a software programmer in San Fransisco has posted a screenshot of a Facebook log-in page that showed a message “Account disabled”. She then wrote to Facebook’s Twitter page (@facebook), “why would you disable my personal account? MY REAL NAME IS ISIS ANCHALEE”. Anchalee said she sent Facebook her personal information three times to resolve the issue.

Anchalee sent her personal information three times to Facebook for resolving the issue. She wrote on Twitter as, “Facebook thinks I’m a terrorist. Apparently sending them a screenshot of my passport is not good enough for them to reopen my account.”

Facebook thinks Woman Named Isis as Terrorist

As soon as she wrote on Twitter, thousands of people responded to her tweet showing their sympathy towards her Facebook account suspension. Some even shared their stories of friends with the same name were also blocked. She wasn’t alone in her resentment, though, as there are many people like her who got their account blocked.

Facebook Researcher responds to her tweet

She even sent her photo ID as verification for three times. A researcher at Facebook Omid Farivar responded on Twitter on Tuesday that her account was activated again. “This was an error made as part of a fake account reporting process and we’re sorry for the trouble it caused. It was not connected to the individual’s name and her account has already been restored,” a Facebook spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Reactivated Isis Account

Farivar sent out another tweet regretting for the mess-up and conveyed that the account was back up and running again. Anchalee is back online on Facebook, although there’s likely plenty more users who aren’t as fortunate to get their accounts unblocked. Isis is an Ancient Egyptian goddess of health, marriage and wisdom. Many people with this name have expressed concerns about the use of the acronym ISIS to refer to Islamic State, the group which claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks.
