Walter Forbes: Black Man That Was Jailed For 37 Years On Murder Conviction Is Freed After Witness Admits She Lied

Say his name.

Walter Forbes, a black man, was released from prison last month after serving 37 years in prison for a crime that he had never committed.

Forbes, who is 63, was released from jail after a key witness admitted that the testimony that she had given was not true.

The crime happened in 1983 but Forbes was never there.

Forbes, who is from Michigan, was arrested in 1982 after he broke up a fight in a bar.

One of the men that were involved in the brawl in the bar, named Dennis Hall, shot Forbes the day after the incident.

Later, Hall was killed in a fire that was ruled as arson by the authorities.

Annice Kennebrew, a key testimony in the case, gave a false statement, where she said that she had seen Forbes at the scene of the fire.

Forbes ended up being falsely convicted of arson and murder.

In 2017, Annice came forward to the authorities and admitted something.

The woman said that she had never seen Forbes at the scene.

The woman testified that she had given a falsely impacted statement.

The reason that she gave was that she had been intimidated into doing so by 2 local men that she knew.

The 2 men, who are from her neighborhood, had threatened to harm her and her family if she did not do what they said.

Talking about his release, Forbes said that he is grateful to the woman for telling the truth and clearing him for the charges that he was falsely convicted on.

Forbes also condemned the justice system that failed him.

He said:

Calling it the justice system gives a false impression. Just using the term ‘justice’ gives you the sense that it is a just system. I couldn’t believe it was happening. One of the things I had faith in was that the truth was going to come out, that there was no way they were going to convict me for those lies. Up until I was convicted, I thought the system would work, that it would correct itself. In hindsight, I was naive.

It is unclear if the woman that gave the false statement will face any jail time for false statement that she gave.

As per the laws in the USA, a witness that lies under oath can spend 6 years in prison if found guilty of doing such a thing.
