Active Use Of Facebook, Twitter May Reduce Health Problems Like BP, Diabetes In Elderly People

In this modern world, people are stuck to electronic gadgets like smartphones, iPods, laptops, etc. The shocking fact is that all age group people are using these gadgets. Social Networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Whatsapp are which attracting everyone towards them.

From school children to aged people, everyone is using these gadgets and above stated micro-blogging sites. Leaving children aside, if your grandparents are using and making friends on Facebook, chatting online, don’t stop them.

Research Says:

According to the recent survey, it is said that using them and being online could reduce loneliness as well as chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes in older adults. One of the researchers said that social media technology like emails, Twitter, Skype has the potential to cultivate successful relationships among older adults.

“The research study also found that participants active on social media platforms were generally more satisfied with life and had fewer depressive symptoms as well as chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes.”

More than 95% of the elderly participants in the study said they were either ‘somewhat’ or ‘very’ satisfied with technology, while 72% said they were not opposed to learning new technologies. “Each of the links between social technology use and physical and psychological health was mediated by reduced loneliness,” said William Chopik, Assistant Professor at Michigan State University, in the US.

In the previous research on technology, it was focused on the lifespan on the digital divide or the disparities between younger and older adults. For the recent study, the team examined the benefits of using technology for social connection among older adults in 591 participants with an average age of 68.
