Could Amazonian Psychedelic Treat Depression?

In a report, it was found that near about 16 million adults in the United States are suffering from the depression. If we talk globally near about 300 million peoples is affected by the recession.

Some depression adults can be cured by using drugs or some by using such therapy. Apart from this 10 -30 % of the depression adults don’t have any responsibility for these existing drugs.

This is the only reason; medical researchers are eagerly testing for some effective prevention. They tested both novel and known compounds in the search for more effective medicines.

Recently in the study, the team of the medical scientists conducted the research and investigated the potential use of the psychedelic drug Ayahuasca.

Ayahuasca is the drug which is used for both spiritual and healing purpose. The drug was used by the indigenous people of the Amazon basin. Ayahuasca is made by mixing two plants named Psychotria Viridis and Banisteriopsis Caapi.

Both these plants contain N- Dimethyltryptamine, Reversible Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor. It’s the chemicals that are already in use to prevent depression.

Experiment Conducted in Journal Psychologival Medicine

A new experiment was conducted which was published in the journal psychological medicine, their focus of experiment is to test whether this drug has a chance of curing patients who are facing difficulty in preventing depression.

Some previous study got failed due to lack of placebo group. The placebo effect is very important in the study of psychiatric conditions. So in an earlier study, it was difficult to draw the robust conclusions.

The authors who are the part of the recent study believe that it is the first ever controlled trial to investigate psychedelic substance performs in the treatment of depression.

For the study medical scientists tested the drugs on 29 peoples. These peoples had not responded to at least two antidepressant medications. These 29 people only received placebo or a single dose of Ayahuasca. Authors of the study stated that they provided free medicines to people who are recruited for the study.

The team assessed these 29 peoples after seven days of receiving the dose. The analysis shows the positive results.

Authors said, “We observed significant antidepressant effects of Ayahuasca when compared with placebo at all time points,”
