Women rights activist Trupti Desai has landed in a controversy after a video, which shows she is holding a slipper and beating a man with it in a village near Pune in Maharashtra, widely shared on social Media. Some other men and a woman, who could be her colleagues are seen assisting her in the video.

Desai said Srikant Londhe had sexually exploited the woman after he promised to marry her. After she got pregnant, he said he would marry her if she got an abortion, but he went back on his word again after the woman terminated her pregnancy.

“We thrashed him in full public view and forced the police to register the woman’s complaint. When the girl came to me with the complaint, I even met the man’s father and insisted that he marry her, but he refused and tried to settle the matter by offering money to the victim“, she added.

Londhe and woman were worked at a manufacturing firm, Jabil Circuit India where Shrikant was an engineer and the woman worked as a helper.

Many called the act a stunt, criticising Desai for it. Desai’s vigilante-styled-justice has also created a furore on social media with many questioning her stand to take law into her own hands.

The local police arrested the man, identified as Srikant Londhe, after the beating and have charged him with rape.
