If you force a woman to undergo a virginity test in Maharashtra, you can be punished and can be jailed for forcing someone to do it.

There are some people in the state who forces women to undergo a test that will prove that they are virgin, the test is done before they get married.

The Minister of State for Home Ranjeet Patil met a group of people on Wednesday that consisted of social organizations to hear about this issue.

Neelam Gorhe the spokesperson of the Shiv Sena was also in the talks.

Ranjeet Patil said: “Virginity test will be considered a form of sexual assault…after consultations with the Law and Judiciary department, a circular will be issued declaring it a punishable offense.”

The test is done in the Kanjarbhat community and others before letting the girl marry someone. Other people in the community launched a campaign against this online.

Minister Patil said that the department will look out a monthly review of the said cases, and will make sure that low pendency will happen in the courts.
