Cornwall Woman Avoids Jail Time Despite Starving 25 Horses And Leaving Their Hooves Untrimmed

In what the RSPCA calls one of the worst cases of animal cruelty they have ever seen in Cornwall, a 41-year-old woman has avoided jail time even after admitting that she did the horrible acts.

One of the 25 horses that she starved has died.

41-year-old Amanda Thorne, a mother of 2, is from Bodmin, Cornwall, and was only given a suspended sentence along with a ban from keeping equines for life after her treatment of the animals.

According to Judges, the 41-year-old mother showed no remorse for her acts.

The RSPCA has called the incident as the cruelest animal neglect that they have ever witnessed.

The RSPCA got to know about the horrible conditions of the animals after the neighbors in rural Cornwall raised the alarm.

District Judge Diana Baker of the Plymouth Magistrates Court, said, “The horses were starving to death, they were not being treated for their ailments. Their hooves were not being trimmed. They were in a pitiful state.”

Judge Baker added, “You have shown no remorse for what happened and you blamed others. Concerned members of the public brought this matter to the attention of the RSPCA. One of the experts said that this could have been a whole lot worse if they had not brought the matter to their attention.”

When authorities came to inspect the crime scene, they found out that the animals were missing basic amenities.

The horses had no clean hosing, decent food, fresh drinking water, dry lying area, and did not have any parasitic control.

Out of the 25 horses, 8 horses had overgrown hooves, and 4 of them were malnourished.

1 horse was rushed to a vet after the investigating officers found out that it had foot abscess, rain scald, lymphangitis, cellulitis, and wounds.

As mentioned above, one of the houses died and the others were taken back to safety by the NSCPA.

Initially, Judge Baker was going to send Thorne to jail, but upon sentencing, she decided to suspend her 6-month term for 12 months.

Judge Baker said, “I have given you a chance, I have given your children a chance and your parents a chance. If you breach any part of the order your feet will not touch the ground.”

The new sentence of Thorne requires her to complete 15 days of her probation’s Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.

She was also asked to pay 15,000 towards the RSPCA’s costs.

Thorne is going to wear an electronic tag as part of a 4-month curfew.

The mother brought her 2 children to live on the farm while she was going through a divorce from her husband.

During the investigation, Thorne said she was dealing with health difficulties.

Initially, she denied the charges but upon trial, the judge found her guilty.

Jo Pearson, an RSPCA Inspector, said, “It is completely the right sentence for this lady. I have been working for the RSPCA as an inspector for 20 years and it is one of the cruellest cases I have ever seen. Without members of the public coming to us with the information, she would never have been brought before the courts today.”
