How Many Kangaroos Are Commercially Killed In Australia Each Year By Hunters?

Australia is known for a lot of great things, which include the kangaroo, which many consider as the icon of the country. But these animals are hunted by farmers and hunters that want to use their flesh and skin.

Kangaroo flesh is sold in a number of places, which includes local markets and in Europe, where the demand is high. On the other hand, kangaroo skin is used by shoe manufacturers such as EOS Footwear and RM Williams.

These adorable and peaceful animals are killed because they roam freely, which causes millions of damages on crops and cause accidents on roads.

Here is the official legal commercial kill of kangaroos from 1975 to 2001:

1975 885,000
1980 2.9 million
1990 3.9 million
1998 4.1 million
1999 5.7 million
2000 5.5 million
2001 5.5 million

In 2016, 1.34 million kangaroos were killed for the commercial industry, and in 2017, the cull numbers were expected to be the same.

During dusk farmers and commercial kangaroo, hunters come out to kill the peaceful animals when they are grazing freely.

According to reports, more than 1.5 million kangaroos were killed in 2015 and 5 million were slaughtered in 2012.

Hunters often use rifles to kill the animals, and the National Code of Practice requires a lethal shot to the head, but this often doesn’t take place.

But according to PETA, up to 40 percent of the commercial shot animals are hit in the neck or elsewhere on their body. As of now, no statistics are available for the number of animals who get wounded and escape just to go through extreme pain and endure a long-dead as a result of their bullet injuries.

The numbers that we mentioned above are only quotas that are released with the public. Those numbers only include commercial killings that are done for exports.

Millions of kangaroos are killed non-commercially.

According to a report by viva.org.uk, “1 million kangaroos are shot annually in that state in addition to the commercial quota.”

According to the Australian Wildlife Protection Council, the number of kangaroos and wallabies that are killed each year in Australia is as high as twice the federally set commercial quota.

Taking that scenario in mind, this means that there were over 10 million kangaroos killed in 2001, where 5.5 million were set for the commercial quota.
