A couple of days ago, the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an organization that works in rescuing and rehabilitating animals in Kenya, shared the story on Facebook, where the story went viral.

In the post, the wildlife trust said:

“It’s a Zonkey! Working with wildlife, one learns to expect the unexpected. Even the most seemingly straightforward story can eventually reveal its true stripes and end up surprising us all. Last year, our SWT/KWS Tsavo Vet Unit moved a wayward female zebra from community land back to a protected area. It was an uneventful translocation and the zebra has been loving life since. We did, however, have quite the surprise recently, with the appearance of a baby zonkey – a hybrid between a zebra and a donkey – by her side.”

Explain how it happened, the wildlife trust said that the Zebra accidentally ventured out the Tsavo East National Park in May last year and became a member of a local woman’s cattle herd.

When they got to know about the incident, they knew they had to rehabilitate the poor animal, so they transported the zebra to the Kenze Anti-Poaching Team’s base in Chyulu National Park.

The zebra made it her home and was spotted by the anti-poaching team from time to time.

The trust said, “Earlier this year, our fence maintenance team caught a glimpse of the zebra with a tiny foal by her side.”

It was only weeks later that the team realized that there was a surprising twist to the whole thing as they noticed the foal was “suspiciously light on stripes and overwhelmingly tawny in color.”

They added, “At first, we thought that it had just been wallowing in the mud bath, but then the truth dawned on us: Our wayward zebra had given birth to a zonkey!”

Images of the rare hybrid were shared by the organization on Facebook.
