Iran Passes Bill That Will Protect Women From Domestic Violence

Iran has passed a new bill that will play a huge role in protecting women from domestic violence.

The bill, which is known as the Protection, Dignity and Security of Women Against Violence, is the one that will protect the women.

President Hassan Rouhani approved the bill, which will protect women against domestic and other forms of violence in the country.

The bill was in the works since the administration of former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The bill is going to be reviewed and approved by the parliament of the country,, which it will be sent to the Guardian Council.

Masoumeh Ebtekar, the vice president for women and family affairs dedicated the 58-article bill to worthy and patient women of Iran.

The bill defense violence as “any behavior inflicted on women due to sexuality, vulnerable position or type of relationship, and inflicts harm to their body, psyche, personality and dignity, or restricts or deprives them of legal rights and freedoms.”

The Ministry of Health is tasked by the draft bill to boost the medical and psychological services to women and train experts in making handling of women who are victims of violence better.

Not only that, law enforcement and prison organizations are among other entities that will increase their vision to help women.

Iran has a long history of mistreating women.

On a daily basis, around 2000 women are arrested because they are not wearing their veils properly, yes, 2000.

Not only that, girls in Iran are married when they turn 18. Some fathers also marry their daughters when they are just 9. This happens with a judge’s approval.

In the year 2017, Iran registered over 234,000 marriages of girls under the age of 15.

In the current laws of Iran, girls as young as 6 should have their hair covered and anyone who breaks the law, including girls over the age of the 9, will be held criminally accountable.

In the year 2018, the Iranian Chief Coroner and published by the state-owned IRNA news agency said that 77,059 women were victims of domestic violence and honor killing.

Child Abuse and Incest are also a huge thing in the country. According to official data released by Iran, over 5200 young women are victims of child abuse and incest.

Let’s hope the new law will play a huge role in cutting those numbers and helping women feel safe in their own country.
