Apple Dropped Intel as A Supplier of Radio Chip

As suggested by a reply, Apple notified that it would be dropping Intel as the radio chip maker. Previously it was planned that Intel was decided to supply the radio chip for upcoming mobiles.

Why does Apple drop Intel?

Apple was the primary customer for the chip with a combination of 5G, Wi-FI, and Bluetooth. According to apple Intel has halted the program. Due to which Apple has dropped Intel as a chip supplier for Apple phones in 2020.

What does official statement say?

“Intel will not provide 5G modems for Apple’s 2020 mobile devices, according to internal company communications reviewed by Calcalist, and people familiar with the matter. Apple has notified Intel it would not use a mobile modem developed by the chipmaker in its next-generation mobile device, Intel executives said in the communications. Further development of the modem component internally called “Sunny Peak” has been halted, and the Intel team that’s working on the product will be redirected to other efforts, the executives said.”

Update: Intel has denied CTech’s claim that it has abandoned work on the product:

“Intel’s 5G customer engagements and roadmap have not changed for 2018 through 2020. We remain committed to our 5G plans and projects.”

Apple, previously used to use Qualcomm radio chips. However, due to numerous lawsuit and dispute. Apple had to look elsewhere for chips. Which lead Apple to Intel, which is all set to deliver a bulk order to Apple this year. However, even though Intel is providing the chip. Apple still needs to depend on Qualcomm for a part of the supply.

What are the other options for Apple?

According to reports, Media Tek was making its move to get the orders Apple modem orders. However, the Large-scale rollout of 5g chips in mobile is unlikely to happen before 2020. As always Apple is going to be a later adopter of new things.

However, Intel has not given up hopes. The company is said to pitch Apple for its 5g chip for the Apple devices in 2022. Now what is left to uncover is what is Apple going to do for its future mobiles chip.
