Google Can’t Force OEMs to Set Chrome and Google Search As Default-Eu

To OEMs to run Play store, Google has specific terms that they need to agree on. OEMs need to pre-install Google Chrome and Google search and set the default. If they don’t, they won’t be able to run the Google Play store.

What does EU argue?

Margarethe Vestager is the EU’s competition chief, and she argues that Google’s requirement ensures its dominance in its internet ecosystem of services. Undoubtedly, Google has an advantage over its search engine and browser competitors.

What does the law say?

According to the law, you can not force your product by taking advantage of your dominance. Moreover, that is precisely what Google is doing. Google is forcing OEMs to use its products using its dominance.

Any previous incident like this.

Back in 2016, Google was fined EU 2.4 billion for allegedly de-ranking competitor shop comparison tools in favor of Google’s own.

The other side argues that Google needs to make money back somehow so it can continue to keep the operating system open in the first place. “Nobody is forced to take Google’s apps, but if you want to have certain apps, you have to have the whole suite,”

What does it mean for customers?

The Internet is an open place. Also, just because Google is dominant in the market. It can not force its products using the dominance. If allowed so, the competition would not have a fair chance. Now, due to this competitors would not get the exposure that they should. Which will limit their growth rate and boost up Google’s? Soon papers maybe everything is open for everyone to join. However, the dominance of Google won’t let people have many options. So the consumers won’t be able to make a choice based on fair business policies. Indirectly most of the people will be forced to use what is given in front of them.

This and recent changes in the EU towards more aggressive consumer protection regulations make it better for the consumer to enjoy the product as well as give the competition a fair chance. Meanwhile, in the States, an event like this will eventually apply pressure towards the regulators over the US Federal Trade Commission.
