Train Knocks Over Two Elephants In West Bengal, One Adult Male Elephant Killed

Forest Department officials of West Bengal confirmed that one adult male elephant was killed after a train ran over it and another elephant in Jalpaiguri, West Bengal.

Officials added that the incident happened on Sunday evening when the Dhubri-New Jalpaiguri Intercity Express was passing through the area where two elephants were passing by.

The male adult elephant passed away on the spot and one other elephant was found injured near the Reti and Moraghat forest of Jalpaiguri.

The remains of the dead male elephant have been sent for a necropsy.

The forest officials added that the injured elephant is currently being treated by medical experts.

Prakash Kumar, the driver of the Dhubri-New Jalpaiguri Intercity Express, said that he saw the elephants on the railway track when the train came really close to them.

Kumar added that he hit the emergency brakes, but was not enough because the train was already near the elephants.

Seema Chowdhury, the Wildlife Warden of West Bengal, said that the incident is really unfortunate.

A meeting will be done with the railway authorities in the state and will tackle about the incident.
