LSU Veterinarians Build Lego Wheelchair For Pedro, A Turtle Who Does Not Have Back Legs

When Pedro, a turtle, lost his back legs, no one knew if he could walk again in the future.

But this changed thanks to Veterinarians at the Louisiana State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital, who came up with the idea to create a Lego wheelchair for the poor turtle.

When Pedro was adopted, he only had one missing leg, but the cheeky turtle managed to escape and when he came back, he lost another one.

The owners of Pedro decided to bring him to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital at the Louisiana State University.

Ginger Guttner, the communication manager for the School of Veterinary Medicine at the Louisiana State University, said, “There was nothing medically wrong with him. But of course he didn’t have any back legs, so our doctors quickly had to figure out what they were going to do.”

And this is when the vets at the school hospital came up with the idea to create a Lego car kit for the poor turtle.

Ginger continued, “Veterinary medicine often requires this MacGyver-like quality. I would say the majority of special equipment we use has been fashioned or re-fashioned for a specific case.”

The owner of Pedro said that he is not having any problems with the wheelchair.

Sandra Traylor, the owner of Pedro, said, “He’s taken to the wheels with absolutely no problem. He adjusted right away to them. He backs up, he turns, goes back and forth,”

Traylor added, “He, overall, is a pretty happy camper after all he went through. It’s like a science class but better because you’re living it.”

Pedro is now learning how to control the wheelchair, but for now, he has learned how to roll with it.
