Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is the name which is doing rounds on social media websites since few days. Who is this Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh? Why is he in the news for so long now? Let us know about him and some facts that many don’t know about him.
Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was born on 15 August 1967 in Rajasthan. He is an Indian spiritual leader, social worker, actor, director and singer. He has been the head of the spiritual group Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS) since 23 September 1990.
The Indian Express placed Gurmeet 96th in their list of the 100 most powerful Indians of 2015 because he has about five crore devotees and several politicians seek his blessings before polls. Gurmeet has also been involved in controversies. Mainstream Sikh leaders have accused him of insulting their faith.
Dera chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was also found guilty in the rape case, murder and forced castrations by a special CBI court on 25 August 2017. Gurmeet has two state governments on the edge as he awaits a verdict on a rape case on Friday. He was immediately taken into custody and the quantum of sentence will be announced on August 28.

Accused In A Rape Case:
After 200 hearings spread over 10 years and numerous stay orders of higher courts, a CBI special trial court in Panchkula on Friday convicted Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh, in a case related to raping his female followers. The court will pronounce the sentencing on Monday.
Gurmeet’s Arrest:
Thus, from Wednesday, parts of Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh have been under a security lockdown as 200,000 supporters of Ram Rahim had assembled in Panchkula ahead of the verdict. Schools, colleges, and government offices remained closed, and train and bus services have been curtailed.
Mobile internet and data services had been suspended in Haryana, Punjab, and Chandigarh for 72 hours in order to curb violence from spreading. Schools and colleges in Panchkula were closed on Wednesday and are said to reopen on August 28. The security in both the states has been beefed up while Army has also been contacted by the state governments to ensure assistance in maintaining law and order.

1. Gurmeet’s father was a follower of Shah Satnam Ji, the second chief of Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS) group.
2. In 1990, Satnam declared Ram Rahim as his successor making him the third chief of Dera Sacha Sauda (DSS) group at the age of 23 years.
3. He is married to Harjeet Kaur and has two daughters – Charanpreet Kaur and Amarpreet Kaur, and a son named Jasmeet Singh.
4. His ‘devotees’ hail him for his social service. From working during Gujarat earthquake to organizing biggest blood donation camps, the Ram Rahim has encouraged supporters done it all. The Dera followers have also created ‘World Record’ for organizing largest blood donation camp in December 2003, in which more than 15000 donors participated.
