A daily wage man worker in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district is carrying his 9-year-old daughter, who was raped almost two months ago, to a primary health centre at least 4 kilometres away everyday for treatment.

A local driver lured the 9-year-old girl with some chocolate before raping and abandoning her by a riverside with a ruptured intestine early in the month of July. Profusely bleeding and the child unable to stand or walk the she crawled back to her home about a kilometre away and narrated the ordeal to her parents. The 9-year-old girl was immediately admitted to a local hospital where her condition worsened and she had to be rushed to Jamshedpur hospital for better treatment.

The doctors could not stop her bleeding then she was referred to the Ranchi hospital when she had to undergo a critical colectomy surgery in Ranchi and she carries a colostomy bag. After the successful surgery in Ranchi, the doctors managed to check the bleeding and discharged her, but her wounds have to be cleaned every day. “So what if I do not have a cycle or a motorbike? She is my baby, I cannot dump her. I want her to recover at the earliest and for that I have to take her to the doctor every day,” said the poor labourer.

The girls father never skipped the doctor’s visit even in rain or in sunshine. However, the girls burden of the treatment have took a toll on the financial status of the family. The poor labourer said that “I am unable to go for work as this is a priority. We have exhausted whatever in the name of savings we had. Rather we are deep in debt now. God knows how many days we will have to suffer like this. I wish a doctor could come to my home and dress the wounds of my daughter but that’s a dream for us”.

The young girl  has now identified the man accused of raping her after police nabbed him a few days later while trying to rape another minor. Meanwhile Ghatshila sub-divisional officer B P Singh said “I am aware of the minor’s rape and health condition. Let me check what best I can do for her speedy recovery”.
