3 Year Old Brain Dead Girl Becomes The Youngest Organ Donor In Kerala

Anjana, a three year old baby girl from Thiruvananthapuram, who was declared brain dead, on Sunday became the youngest organ donor in Kerala after her liver, kidneys and cornea were harvested by doctors at a hospital. The toddler, who was suffering from a disease fainted while playing in front of her house and was rushed to hospital on Friday. Her condition deteriorated and she was declared brain dead by doctors at SAT hospital on Saturday night, hospital officials said. The harvesting of the organs began at 11 pm on Saturday and it was completed during the wee hours of Sunday.

The organs – liver and kidneys – were given to a five year old boy admitted to Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) in Thiruvananthapuram at 2.30 am on Sunday. The body of Anajana was handed over to the parents early morning.

When Anjana admitted to SAT hospital, the doctors informed her parents about the remote chances of getting her back to life and requested to them donate her organs. The parents much to the dismay of their relatives accepted the request of the doctors agreed to donate their kid’s organs.

Three year old Anjana, daughter of Ajith staying at Enikkara near Karakulam in Thiruvananthapuram has become the youngest organ donor in the Kerala state.

The organ transplantation surgery on the receiver – a five year old boy – commenced by Sunday afternoon and was continuing at the Kerala Institute of Medical Sciences here till late on Sunday.

KIMS sources said the condition of the boy and other details of progress made in the surgery would be made available only on Monday. “The surgery is going on. It’s a multi-organ transplantation and it will take time. The hospital will release a formal bulletin in this connection tomorrow,” a spokesperson of the hospital said.
