Devdasis is a girl “dedicated” to worship and service of a deity or a temple for the rest of her life. Devadasis belt, in Bellary and Koppal districts of Karnataka. Devadasis had a high status in society. After marrying wealthy patrons, they spent their time honing their skills instead of becoming a housewife. Their virginity is auctioned off in the village and they spend the rest of their lives as prostitutes, making money for their families. Devadasi system is contuned in many places like Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
3. Wadia, Gujarat:
Wadia is a small village situated in the Banaskantha district of North Gujarat. Wadia is the only village which openly known for prostitution in Gujarat, which otherwise does not boast of any red-light areas, and flesh trade is a business which thrives underground. Since from ancient times, the womenfolk of this Wadia village in Gujarat have supported their families through prostitution. The men of the villages are pimps and this culture has been around for centuries, which is why it has been difficult to stop.
4. The Bachara Tribe of Madhya Pradesh:
Bachara is a tribal matriarchal community in the western part of Madhya Pradesh. Baachhda’ tribe is also known for practicing prostitution traditionally. Here own women’s are pushed into prostitution by their own fathers and brothers. The role of pimps as soon as they attain the 14 year of age.
