[WATCH VIDEO] More Than 22 People Killed And 30 Injured In Stampede At Mumbai’s Elphinstone Railway Station

With time and tide, Indian railways have only become a major medium of transportation with generations. Millions of Indians prefer train journey over any other for its most economical and time-saving prospects.

Popularly known as country’s one of the most crowded railway station, Mumbai’s Elphinstone Railway Station remains on news forever. For the mammoth crowd, it has especially during the festival seasons, things aren’t changed after all at this place.

More than 22 people have been killed and over 30 seriously injured in a stampede that broke out this morning during peak office hours on a foot-over-bridge at this station. The incident took place at around 10:30 am on the over-bridge linking Elphinstone Road and Parel suburban stations.

The visuals are shared on social media handles, in the video, it is seen passers-by dragging the injured down the bridge. Thousands of commuters use the two stations and the bridge every day as many officers are in the area. An official at the spot said that the many of the injured have been taken to KEM Hospital and other nearby hospitals. It started off with two people falling off the bridge, it was heavily raining.

Meanwhile, “We are still inquiring into the exact reasons. It happened on the narrow staircase. All the injured were rushed to the nearest hospitals,” said police officer Niket Kaushik.

Anil Saxena, a railway spokesperson said, “Many were waiting in the rain. There were too many people in a cramped space. When people were trying to rush to their trains, the stampede happened.

Sources claim that heavy rains left the financial capital flooded and brought the city to a standstill. Mumbai received the heaviest rainfall that day since 2005 and was completely paralyzed as services stopped and most parts of the city were submerged in rainwater.
