New Delhi: Nepalese Prime Minister KP Oli on his first ever trip after he took his office this year, stressed for India’s role for investment on Saturday here, and termed the country in the Himalayan region to be “a safe and stable destination for investment”. “Nepal will need massive investment; many of its sectors are virgin territory for investment. I invite Indian companies to come and invest in Nepal… (that) is now safe for foreign investment,” Mr Oli was quoted saying by news agencies.

The majority in the government held that “stability and continuity in policy… towards a liberal economy and liberal economic policies,” he added.

During the talks with delegations from India side, which also includes the one led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mr Oli is most likely to discuss possible deals in waterways as well as the expansion of India-backed railway to Kathmandu. Alongside these projects, they will also bring into discussion the issues related to trade deficit and would stress on India to complete previously made infrastructure projects with many of them limping along for decades.

As per the Nepalese media, Mr Oli will discuss various issues with Prime Minister Modi. He may discuss to seek execution of India-funded projects in Nepal, implementation of the Mahakali water-sharing treaty and construction of integrated check posts.

The trip is considered to be an important one for India in an attempt to win back the strategically important neighbor that has recently moved closer to China. Mr Oli asserted at that time that India was responsible for his ouster in 2016 and the Madheshi unrest which was soon followed by an economic blockade by India the made Nepal crippled for months.

There have been intense efforts to foster ties since then. In such an attempt to build ties, External Affaris Minister Sushma Swaraj visited Nepal just before Mr Oli took oath to the office to congratulate him for the historic victory. Then after that, PM Modi invited him to visit India while he congratulated him over the phone for his win.

Today he was accorded an elaborate traditional and ceremonial welcome at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Most recently, Nepal had moved a bit closer to China. With the doklam face off and other border related issues still remaining unsolved with China, India needs to play strategically with its neighbor. Nepal is strategic point between India and China. And from a long time it has been a part of India. It was only after the freedom movement, that it came to be recognized as a separate country. Now with the Prime Minister of Nepal is here, there will definitely be significant developments beneficial both for India and Nepal.
