The government said on Thursday that the old Rs 500 notes can no longer be used to buy petrol, diesel and air tickets from the midnight of Dec 2. Also, the government has put an end to toll exemptions at national highways from the midnight of December 2.

Although today onwards, you cannot use the old currency of Rs 500 at petrol pumps, Toll Plazas or booking for air tickets., but there are several places where you can still use the old currency of Rs 500. The Modi government has released some exemption list where you can use old Rs 500 notes. Here’s where you can still use the old 500 notes.

Here are the places where you can still use Rs 500 notes until December 15, 2016:

1. Purchase of LPG gas cylinders.
2. Government hospitals for medical treatment and pharmacies for buying medicines with doctor’s prescription.
3. At railway ticketing counters, bus ticket counters of government.
4. Purchases at consumer cooperative stores such as Mother Dairy outlets operated under authorization of central or state governments with identity proof up to Rs5,000 at a time.
5. Payments towards court fees.
6. School fees up to Rs2,000 per student in Central government, state government, municipality, and local body schools.
7. Fees in central or state government colleges.
8. Pre-paid mobile top-up to a limit of Rs500 per top-up.
9. Payment of current and arrear dues to utilities will be limited to only water and electricity and only available to individuals and households.
10. Catering services in train will accept the old currency.
11. Purchase of tickets for suburban and metro rail travel.
12. Purchase of entry tickets monument maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
13. Payments towards fees charges, taxes or penalties, payable to central or state governments including municipal and local bodies.
14. Payments towards utility charges including water and electricity, but no advance payments.
15. Payments towards the purchase of seeds from designated state-run outlets.
16. Payments at crematoria and burial grounds.

Foreign citizens will be permitted to exchange foreign currency up to Rs5,000 per week. Necessary entry to this effect will be made in their passports. The Reserve Bank of India will issue further guidelines in this regard.

The three places, which will not accept old Rs500 notes from 3 December:

• Petrol, diesel, and gas fuel stations for vehicles.
• Purchase of air tickets from the counter.
• Toll plazas across India which have exempted toll payments will accept old Rs 500 notes from December 3 to December 15.

Digital transactions have also made impressive progress and are expected to significantly improve during the coming days. However, due to demonetization move we are able to witness digital India.
