In India, while many are struggling to understand the concept of same-sex marriages, two inspiring women in Punjab broke all barriers when they decided to get married as per traditional Hindu rituals in the presence of both families.

This heartwarming yet bold move by the official could be nothing less than an inspiration for many. It was a bold move for the police officer to marry her partner. It is illegal in India for people of the same gender to have sexual relations. India also does not recognize same-sex marriage.

We are talking about Manjit Kaur, a Sub-Inspector of the Punjab Police, and her bride. According to a report by Tribune India, the couple tied the knot at Pucca Bagh, Punjab on April 22. 

While Kaur was seen wearing a red turban, her bride rode a chariot. Along with both families, the marriage was attended by Kaur’s colleagues and classmates from college. This is to be noted that it was the first-of-its-kind wedding ceremony that took place in Punjab.

The Inspector said both of them has been divorced their previous partners and were going to embark on a new journey in their lives. Kaur was earlier deputed at the Central Jail in Punjab but was later shifted to Kapurthala.

Nearly 30 years ago, one such marriage happened between two policewomen, Leela and Urmila, that did not go well down the throat of the society, then. The two were immediately suspended from duty when the news spread among people. It was the year 1987.

Although same-sex marriages are still illegal in our country, it is enlightening to see people adapting to the much-required change. Well! we wish them both a happy married life!
