Musical maestro AR Rahman‘s concert was held on July 8 at SS Arena, Wembley, London. But for everyone’s surprise, something unexpected happened at the Oscar-award winning musician AR Rahman’s concert.  Reportedly, a large group of audiences has walked out of the event and yes, it’s true!

Strangely, a few Indian AR Rahman fans have walked out of his concert for a most bizarre reason and ranted on Twitter about how it was wrong of AR Rahman to sing Tamil songs at a concert named “Netru, Indru, Naalai”.

There were some fans, who are unaware of the fact that when you buy tickets to a concert titled ‘Netru Indru Nalai’; never assume that the major chunk of his songs will be in Hindi as it is totally different. The concert is all about Tamil for yesterday, today, tomorrow.

However, there are some fans, who are unaware of this fact, due to which they use social media platforms and crib to complain about most songs sung being in Tamil. And say because of this reason, fans walked out of the concert mid-day.

In fact, some angry fans even asked for a refund because they believed reportedly they feel ‘cheated’ and the other reason being, they were made to sit through songs they could not understand. Some Twitter users called Rahman disrespectful for singing in Tamil and the debate transformed into a North/South India divide.

Was this justified? AR Rahman is majorly known for Tamil work and has also got the title “Mozart of Madras”; how can we expect him not to sing Tamil songs and concentrate only on Hindi songs, just because we like it?

Amidst this growing intolerance for languages other than Hindi, a lot of people and celebrities stood up for AR Rahman calling it as a Rude act from some section of the audience.

However, one brave voice reminded them that music knows no boundaries or language. Singer Chinmayi Sripaada took to Twitter and pointed out the double standards and the hypocrisy of these so called ‘fans’ who decided to insult an artist by walking out of his gig because he chose to sing in some other language.

The South Singer started with pointing out how every Indian was in line to take credit when Mr. Rahman was winning international acclaim.

She also stated the obvious fact that the name of the concert clearly suggested that there will be Tamil music. And, it still had a majority of Hindi songs.

She also questioned the irrational aversion people have towards Tamil.

And the last tweet took the cake. She perfectly described how India is not a monolingual nation and people should stop perceiving it as one.

Her tweets have won the hearts of several people who said there’s no space for hatred. One Twitter user told Chinmayi, “Music has no language barriers I have listened lot of hindi songs I don’t understand the lyrics but I like the music.”
