A zoo in the traditional sense evokes images of wild animals locked in cages where people come to see them. But here in this zoo in China, tourists and predators have switched their places. In this modern version zoo, it is the human beings who will be hidden from view, while the wild animals roam about their surroundings freely.

The Lehe Ledu Wildlife Zoo in China’s Chongqing city cages humans and lets the wild animals roam free. The thrilling experience is meant to show visitors what it’s like to come face-to-face with predators, instead of just viewing them from a safe distance.

A cage, filled with people is driven around the park giving people the chance to get close with some of the world’s most ferocious animals. Chunks of fresh meat are tied to the outside of a vehicle, in a bid to attract the predators and give tourists the closest possible dining experience with them – without becoming dinner themselves.

Visitors can also offer food by hand to these animals through a small opening in the wired mesh that separates them from the predators. Chan Liang, spokesperson of the zoo said to OddityCentral, “We wanted to give our visitors the thrill of being stalked and attacked by the big cats but with, of course, none of the risks. The guests are warned to keep their fingers and hands inside the cage at all times because a hungry tiger wouldn’t know the difference between them and breakfast.”

The zoo was launched in 2015. Animals here include Lions, Bengal tigers and their subspecies, the white tiger, and bears and you need to have prior bookings to venture into the predators’ terrain.

This theme park isn’t the first to put humans in cages so that they can better view captive animals. Another park in New Zealand has a similar exhibit.
