Amethi: Modi’s approach of taking every opportunity to take pot shots at the Congress without a miss was faulted by Congress President Rahul Gandhi. On Tuesday, he commented on his approach, commenting that this approach was contradictory to the one displayed by former prime ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and BJP’s Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Mr Gandhi said politicians normally plan for the future.

“Look at Nehru Ji, even Vajpayee Ji. They used to speak about the future. But look at the current prime minister.  He only looks to the past… spreads hatred,” the Congress president told a gathering during hit visit to the family pocket borough of Amethi district.

In the last Lok Sabha elections in 2014, the district witnessed an intense fight between Congress’ Rahul Gandhi and BJP’s Smriti Irani. Though Rahul Gandhi won and she lost, but her entry reduced Rahul Gandhi’s victory margin from some 3.70 lakh votes in 2009 to 1.07 lakh in 2014. Elections of the last year gave BJP four out of the five assembly segments.

Mr Gandhi alleged that the ruling BJP government at the centre and state had taken away the big projects that he had lined up for Amethi. But he nevertheless held out hope that Amethi would be able to do more than catch up.

According to his claim, Amethi would develop very quickly in another 10-15 years, and people would give talks about Amethi in the same way they talk about Singapore and California of the United States.

As of now, according to Mr Gandhi’s complain, the NDA government had taken away many of the projects including IIIT, mega food-park and the paper mill which was his attempt to set up and if completed, would have employed thousands of youth.

However, he promised that he would try again to bring back some projects which include the food park, especially for the youth. “Unless youths are employed, the country will not progress up to mark,” the Congress leader said.
